TSOL003 demonstrates a switch-up in sound for the Limousine Dream. Brainchild of Gene On Earth, their latest offering operates with Salt Mines founder Rudolf C supplying the magic on this weighty 4-tracker. The Aussie born, Berlin based artist has co-executed with Shedbug a wicked hybrid sound and curation of artists on their label that blend up-tempo techy beats with galvanising frequencies and lucid synth-lines. Connecting the lines between dark tech house, electro, breakbeat and techno. Anything goes on LD and the psychedelic, pumping sound is a welcome formula for the next drop on Limo. ‘Totally Refracted’ brings the style and there’s four succulently trippy cuts to sink your ears into.
It’s clear that this EP is focussed on the ‘journey’ aspect. Setting the scene, progression and building atmosphere before the nose-dive into darker, peak-time wave-lenghts on the flip. As he demonstrates on A1. ‘501 Open Space’ feels playful and engaging, there’s a funky element with some uplifting sounds but below the surface there’s a signal of the dark forces that await. Gloomy stretched-out under-tones buzz on top of a deep, moody bass to create hazy atmosphere whilst the happy-go flirty synth-line sounds almost flute-esque and plays a tempting tune to assemble the troops.
‘Totally Refracted’ on A2 is a second dose of tension-setting. A heightened 4×4 groove is fastened in with tighther, skippy percussion to increase the energy-flow of it’s predessecer. You can’t help but feel immersed in this one, both A1 and A2 amplify an incredible space yet have a plethora of acute sounds rushing through them. ‘Totally Refracted’ will have you soaring in a hypnotic trance, wading through the whirlwind of mystifying synths and intricate textures before crashing back down to get twisted on the B-side.
‘Claymine’ on B1 is dark and tantalising, Rudolf wastes no time in introducing the laser-esque bassline inside the opening seconds and intensifying the atmosphere. This one is a master-class in progression as he expertly applies complex layers and mini droplets of trippy frequencies to this hypnotic rumbler. ‘Claymine’ opts as a perfect peak-time, mid set switch-up. Operating on a low-level, high-energy and full of groove yet mesmeric and eerie.
Casting a final spell on the EP is the ferocious ‘Mind User’ on B2, which closes the EP in teeth-gritting, peak-time style. An up-tempo techy work-out where the Salt Mines sound truly comes out. Rudolf generates another echo-chamber of sound with hats that are exquisitely mynute to the point of not realising their existence, but their ultra-fine nature only heightens the groove. The tribalistic, reverberating snares almost act like hats in their own way and really pump a unique percussion element into the mix.
