CGR005 sparks an exciting debut for London based artist, Benjamin Joseph, with his first solo EP ready to be unleashed. Accompanied by two warping remixes from Vlad Arapasu and Red Meat Therapy.

Joseph spent his primary years on the Ibiza, London and Berlin dance-floors, securing an early taste for underground grooves and passion for crate digging. It wasn’t long before he began cutting his teeth behind the decks. Earning his stripes as a trusted selector in the darker embers of the UK. Keeping the mood simmering at parties like ‘Alternate Facts’ with his eerie, minimal sound. Most recently, Joseph has levelled up into production territories, and secured his first vinyl release in 2020. His weighty collaboration with Michael James, ‘The Island’, shot to the top 3 in the Juno charts and received some heavy-weight support at Sunwaves. Two VA features followed, with appearances on Daydream and Burnski’s aesthetic to solidify a strong flow of debut releases.

His latest offering, serves up four energy-infused rollers to Circa Groove, who themselves are proving to be a solid addition to the underground UK sound. Debuting with a weighty EP for 001 that featured a hypnotic weapon from Rhadow, alongside two infectious remixes from LaRosa and Fitz. Brainchild of Rupert Ellis and Will Mellor, the label has since opted to stretch their perimeters in terms of artist range, and have showcased EP’s from a host of international talents: including Saktu, Brandub, Alex Dam and Zambiancki. Fixating on a core and identity of raw, forward-thinking house music.

CGR005 kick’s off with ‘Evolution Of Time’ A moody, peak-time roller that crunches with a spacey force. Plucky synth-lines dot around the crafty percussion and rise above a charging bassline that promises to rumble all corners of the dance-floor. Distorted vocal chops interject between the beats to add a psychotic twist to the mix. Up next, ‘Bundle’ provides another peak-time after-hours heater. Opting this time to shift the pattern of play by injecting rising pads and lofty grooves to create a nostalgic and warm vibe.

‘Sneaky’, crops up with another monstrous bassline. Willowy tone’s breathe a mysterious illusion into the track. But it’s the tribalistic percussion that does the talking, with some serious drum-play at work. Each snare is echoed to perfection and wrap themselves around the groove in style. ‘Roll On’ supplies one last rhythmic pouncer to make it a quartet of wicked original mixes. Ghostly synth-sounds float inside the atmosphere, rising and falling in flawless synchronisation with the bassline. There’s a proper aftermath and curtain-closing vibe to this one, which make’s it a solid selection to end a set.

Vlad Arapasu wade’s in with a chunky, Romanian style refix of ‘Roll On’. Creating a wonky groove with some weird sounds coursing below the surface, and interjecting the percussion with strong metallic hats to create a gnarly mean-streak. Lastly, Red Meat Therapy conjure up a mellow take on ‘Evolution Of Time’ with a floaty remix. Sprinkling a plethora of delicate textures over the groove to conclude the EP in a dreamy, mesmeric fashion.
