Daydream arrive on the scene once again with some fresh wax business for their 11th installment. This time, showcasing a fresh quartet of talent, with Parsec, Nayve and Benjamin Joseph reppin’ the UK, and Jos Lok applying some Dutch magic to the package. You know the Daydream sound by now. Subtle and bouncy but injected with driving basslines and coarsing riddimz. No gimmicks, no compromise on style and full of surprises. Prioritising quality over quantity with every release, and making sure each blade of sound is carefully curated. Insta-cop material. It’s a strong identity that has attracted a catalogue of exciting European artists to the imprint: including Berlin dogs Nick Beringer and Sota; plus Mbius, jerome.C and Infuse star, Casey Spillman.

XI kicks off with a stripped back melter from Jos Lok. ‘Six Feet From You’ (A1) creates a melodious introduction to the EP with some stunning pad work, etched with a plethora of subtle notes that flicker between the crisp minimal beats. Self-described ‘colourful story-telling’ from the dutchman, it’s definitely a stunning first chapter. Up next is LDN selector Benjamin Joseph, with ‘Low Motion’ on A2. Only still just embarking on his production journey, after years cutting his teeth behind the decks in the dark corners of the UK capital. His collab with Michael James, ‘The Island’, signed to Burnski’s Constant Black topped the Juno charts last year and received heavyweight support at Sunwaves. He’s only looking forward, and has releases in the tank ready to unleash with Before, Aesthetic and Rossko’s ‘Late Night Skankin’. ‘Low Motion’ inhabits that driving badboi sound and you can definitely tell that he’s been rubbing shoulders in the lab with Michael James. A cutting, after-hours roller that is lit up with some sonorous tones to keep things burning into the night.

No introduction needed for Parsec, a firm favourite in our department and an unquestionable talent. He’s been keeping it moving with recent releases on Habits, Metafloor and hedZup. He’s got a fixed sight on the future, keep your ears peeled because he’s got a stack of wax-only dubs in the pipeline. ‘Rotating onto the flip of this Daydream collective we have ‘Illusion’ on B2. A pulsing, minimal bouncer that breathes some cool-off vibes. Willowy layers fill the atmosphere, and the shifty, pumping drums are mixed perfectly into the rhythm to create some steppy’ energy.

Lastly, we showcase ‘Wasting’ Time’ from our fellow Notts compatriot ‘Nayve’. A new alias for a highly reputable and successful artist in his previous form. You’ll have to do some research to identify him cause’ we’re giving nothing away. His ‘Ratio EP’ on Animal Crossing earmarked a weighty debut and sold out across all outlets, paving the way for an exciting new venture. His contribution to the Daydream VA provides one final lofty weapon to the fold and completes the EP in style. A scintillating, moody groover that ticks like a metronome. Oozing in spacey textures that roam inside the dexterous drum patterns to provide a majestic flow. Summer all over this one.
