Bristol based minimalists, Comma Traxx, welcome Mehlor back to to the imprint for a full solo EP. After featuring previously in their debut VA. The vinyl-focussed label is pushing the subtle realms of the UK sound and has a crystal clear visual identity. Already boasting an impressive rota of exciting artists with the likes of Jake Flory, Matt Wills, Rowlanz and S.ONN all involved in their uprising. Including Mehlor, the Yorkshire based artist is in hot demand. Typically conducting his business on the down-low, he is unmistakably a prolific presence in the scene. Attracting attention from all corners of the game and receiving support from a large pool of industry heavy-weights. The ‘Flubber EP’ is next level and is arguably his most contrasting piece of work to date.
Inside we find three warping original mixes, each with their own unique nature that can be used at all points of a set. Showcasing a diversity to his sound, but ensuring we get another taste of his signature grooves. A classy maturity is beginning to shine through in his music, and this EP makes it five consecutive vinyl releases. Demonstrating exactly the calibre and desirability of his most recent productions. MCR badboy Nathan Pinder occupies the remix of ‘Flubber’ on B1, injecting some shifty breaks and steppy energy into this highly anticipated package.
Straight into it with A1, ‘Jabba’. A full-throttle, 130 bpm slammer that will get the juices flowing this summer. Entering proceedings with some clinically swung grooves, a soaring East End Dubs-esque bass takes flight and breathes a powerful energy into the track . Rounded off with some bouncy frequencies in the top-end to create an uplifting vibe. Next on A2 is ‘Bija’. A weird and mischievous weapon that is probably Mehlor’s techiest track yet. Pouncing rhythms and dexterous drum-play whip up a frenzy in the intro, as we proceed down a dubby black-hole. Willowing tones and some trippy sound-effects create a mysterious atmosphere, and make it a certified creeper that will do some damage.
On the flip, Nathan Pinder is recruited to remix ‘Flubber’ and doesn’t disappoint. He’s got a spring in his step after recent features with Nuanaces de Nuit, Haws, and Dr. Banana under his PINDER (UKG) alias. A daring producer who is never afraid to switch it up. Opting on this occasion to give ‘Flubber’ a funky, downtempo refix that spring’s into action; with dynamic breaks and a killer bass melody. Completing the EP and knocking it into orbit is ‘Flubber’, the final original mix on B2. An after-hours roller with cunning percussion and a devious groove. But it’s the intricate textures and layers of rhythm that do the talking, with so many fine details to sink your ears into. A definitive minimal heater for the late night skankers amongst us.
