+98 return to the action with their fourth injection of bumpy club trax. This time, with a fresh quartet of artists lined up inside a clinical first VA from the Berlin gang. Their sound is dark and direct, projecting a distinct UKG identity that’s full of fierce and quirky elements. The ethos is clear too. Promoting a multi-dimensional realm of artists from varying backgrounds regardless of gender, sexuality and ethnicity. Breaking down the barriers of a scene that is often a closed shop and providing a platform for under-privileged DJs and producers to express themselves.

So far, the imprint has stretched across two years with a small but weighty discography. They’ve devised solo EP’s from Berlin headz PJ Bridger and label boss L&F for the debut releases, with the third edition comprising of a slick collaboration EP between the two rising artists. The fourth instalment welcomes some fresh faces to the fold and is comprised with a splash of heavyweight sounds and ideas.

We premiere ‘Exrealisms’ on A1 from the mysterious Suno Soniason. A perfect intro track, that blends a concise and wobbly sub with some enchanted synth-work. Atmospheric and piercing in equal measure. Discult Soundsystem and Kumanope occupy A2 with ‘HS 13’. A sooty after-hours heater that chugs along in a housey haze. The drums are shifty yet have a level of delicacy, mixed perfectly with an assortment of lazer pads that ooze through the bassline. Distorted vocal stabs interject into the latter stages of the B-Line to further elevate the trippy hysteria.

Onto the flip on B1 is Xantrax with ‘Panja’. A willowy introduction soon escalates into merky territory with this grime inspired steppa. The cagey sound-design keeps it under control and the fighting style percussion merges expertly with the glitchy effects and chopped beats. Reminiscent of the gloomy attitude of the oldskool Burial sound. Last up is ‘Next Chapter’ from Aezron on B2. A moody groover that is powered by a gritty bass that does the talking, as it pulses and pauses between the broken beats and knotty breaks. Floaty piano chords and some provocative vox breathe a dreamy flex into the last act and see the EP out nostalgic style.
