Keecen, makes his third appearance on Norwegian label Mhost Likely with his most club-focussed EP to date. The ‘Stereo Provider’ EP is a chunky six-tracker with four super-charged house cuts, plus remixes from Ams (Surge, Shall Not Fade) and Jeku (Craigie Knowles, Haws). Vibe-wise, the package draws big inspiration from the classic 90’s sound, but is packed with a techier style and forward-thinking sound designs. It’s a new direction for Keecen after previously adopting a more melodic approach to his style. Look no further if you’re a DJ with a taste for bumpy house trax with a dynamic edge.
First up is ‘Stereo Provider’. It starts with a dazzling intro that’s both weird and enticing before smoothly transitioning into the stream-lined first act. A slip and slide slalom of undulated funk, summer drip and a fresh 4×4 flavour follows; buffed with a tasty Youandewan-esque bass-synth and some freaky effects to pump this one with the ultimate groove.
‘Higher Energy’ shifts the tempo up a notch with a speedy rocket, pushing into the 130 territories but still maintaining a refined house sound. This EP is peak-time by design and the sequel whips up another groove frenzy, jammed with a gnarling bass groove and wonky synths that bounce off each other in parallel motion. Keecen skilfully creates angelic voices that work like pads and automates them to fluctuate and stab at specific intersections to inject his basslines with mystery and tenacity.
‘Dial Up’ channels the classic house sound more than any other in the package, but is patterned with a stompy groove; shuffly drums and a wickedly cutting-edge bass. Shards of laser-bright synth stabs also shine through the mix at varying moments to fully drench this one in soaking garden party joy.
Keecen locks in one more original mix to the EP. ‘Nectar’ is the floatiest number of the package, a luxurious roller that’s ready to take you on a last ditch groove-cruise of good vibrations and maximum dance-ability. Once again, the melodic elements of Keecen’s sound sets him apart. The tenacious groove gets the juices flowing, but the colliding high-tone synths and arpeggios bounce connect super smoothly to push the feeling to a climatic body-high.
AMS’s take on ‘Stereo Provider’ is a proper crowd pleasing warper and drenches his remix with total terrace-soaked vibrations. There’s so many good moments in this EP and this remix provides another highlight; rocking the same melody and keeping the funk intricate but applying skippy drums with chunky snares to this crafty banger.
Jeku concludes the EP with the darkest mix of the EP and doesn’t disappoint with his re-imagination of ‘Higher Energy’. Known for his spacey robotic sound, his remix is crafted for the warehouse. Casting a gloomy spell on the original with a tainted groove, re-wired alien frequencies and a pitch-black groove that’s sure to get you lost in the atmosphere.
