The return of Manchester starlet Loz Goddard to Oath is a highly anticipated one as his latest jaunt serves up a fresh trio of cuts that breathe a clubbier edge to his sound, but still inhibit the eclectic colour that his productions are renowned for. The beauty of this EP is that the tracks are the kind that could be a vibrant force on festival dance-floors, but would also be highly pleasurable enzymes for the ears in the comforts of your home. The musicality and taste for sensual melodies is something that Loz completely resonates into his productions and now his sound is even more finely tuned for the clubs we’ll hopefully be hearing a lot more of his elegant sounds on the big systems.
The sequel to Goddard’s debut LP is titled ‘Are We Ever Leaving Here?’ and is scaled down from his full bodied debut to produce three stunning original cuts. Re-enforcing the package to max there’s also remixes from Casa Voyager boss OCB and Bristolian sorcerer Boulderhead to firmly accentuate the ‘club’ intentions of this EP.
The first excursion, as titled the same as the EP, is the fully vibrant and outer-limit exploring ‘Are We Leaving Here’ (A1). It embarks on it’s journey with just a single animated chord, soaking in a hazy reverb and pulsing through your membrane to full effect. It’s soon joined by an assemblage of crisp drums and determined breaks, progressing beautifully with a true sonic venturism. Loz pumps a lusciously warm bass into the substructure of the track to create a cascading wave of motion and breathes light into the mix with a multitude of sparkling synth-lines that splash around the high-end.
OCB take’s control of ‘AWLH’ and accelerates the BPM to the max with a break-neck interpretation of the original cut (A2). The melodies remain firmly in-tact but are re-imagined with OCB’s high quality skippy drum-play and shape-shifting breaks. It’s a definitive heads-down affair in the blazing sun with a demand for bass-faces, full motion with the tight grooves and deft dance-floor foot-work.
Transporting us onto the flip of the record and straight back into the lucid realms of the overworld is the hallucinatory allures of ‘Parallaxing’ (B1). A stylish and dreamy cut that evokes the essence of 90’s techno with a stream of pulsing hats and throbbing acid-lines dancing in parallel of one-another. It’s the tuffest cut of the EP is the clearest demonstration of Goddard’s new-found affiliation with a bouncier sound. Music like this is almost too good to be true and one could only be so lucky to hear this stunning projection under the moon lit stars on a purring system.
The closing pleasure-trip from the EP is the deliciously ethereal ‘Space Nugz’ (B2). An orbital transmission of the finest quality that take’s aim at the sky, solemnly cruising the outer-limits like Hals Moving Castle. Sophisticated down-tempo breaks set the tempo, and there’s an ultra-absorbing bass that feels so cosy and encapsulating as it pumps a stunning golden plume of hazy energy into the slip-stream. Goddard breathes life into the mix once again with a surge of winding melodies that act inter-connected, with dreamy synth-tones and angelic pad notes conducting a totally soothing listening experience for the final indulge into his magically dulcet world.
Boulderhead is tasked with the final piece of the EP’s labyrinth and produces a typically psychedelic remix for ‘Space Nugz’ that’s both transcendent and mirrored with the same earthly spirit of the original. A producer who cuts a mythical presence in a visual sense, but carries an experienced and classy hand with his productions that fully take you to the outer-regions. His remix casts a beautiful spell on the original by combining celestial techno minimalism with super-intricate drum programming. As shards of heavenly tones rain down like space dust and a trippy live-wire fizzes through the bassline to cut the atmosphere with an acid edge.
