004 from Amsterdam based Polychrome Audio is the first diversion into full breakbeat territory for the label and artist. A stunning concept from fellow Dutchie Marijn S that draws inspo from the halcyon 90’s sound but is fused with her own unique plethora of technical sounds to create the ‘Conundrum EP’. Built with mind-expanding sound designs and nostalgia dripping beauty, it promises to take you a tilted escapade into the inner galaxies of your cranium. Expect razer-sharp breakz with complex detailing, atmospheres seeping in colour and immersive yet emotive synth-play in this captivating spiritual expansion.
The A1 ‘Artic Flora’ presides with an outer-wordly breaks encounter, as Marijn perfectly executes a mythical blend of super tuff drum programming and utopian sound-scapes. The opening act initiates with obscurely patterned hits, but before-long exerts into a full throttle breakz build up that’s super-charged with junglistic percs, intricate detailing and finely robust snares. Now in full flow, ‘Artic Flora’ seriously kicks into gear. Transcending into it’s spiritual climax as ice-beam pads thrum on the artic horizon and gleaming synth-shards fizzle into the stratosphere like shooting stars.
The second enactment ‘Cuckoo And Azaleas’ (A2) concocts another fully robust breakz exertion with equally energy-setting exterior. It sets up similarly with some killer drum-play, tribalistic and pouncing to full effect before diverging into sterner territory for the initial act of it’s bassline. A wonky yet gnarling synth-line dives between the lines with darting agility, purring in the midst of the surface to create a bubbly progression. The bassline reverts back into an ethereal scenery as echoed voices haunt the mix with an angelic presence, smoothly transitioning into a reflective break-down before combining beautifully with the drums again for the closing act.
Something different arises on the flip of the record as Marijn shuts down the engines momentarily with ‘Hazy Moon’ (B1), descending into a pool of ambient gloom and contemplative relaxation. It’s a beautiful little piece in essence of it’s mysterious existence, but there’s also an eerie and lost atmosphere, winding the surroundings around you as you look for signs of life and only have the giant pearl in the sky as a companion.
The EP closer ascends back into club territory with a soulful force and funky flow. Marijn uses her own vocals to full effect, exuding like a hazy bass of their own and flowing like an incandescent breeze. ‘Uh-Oh’ (B2) is playful and vibrant, the grooviest of the package for sure and will leave the dance-floor feeling fully encapsulated in a cloud of mindful exultation.
