Diego Krause returns to his FORAX fold with the 8th injection of his self-releasing imprint. A strong and respected figure in Berlin and the European circuit, Krause has been pumping out weapons for over ten years: and featured heavyweight EP’s with the likes of BERG Audio, Constant Sound, Mulen and Beste Modus; always true to his style and now firmly a name synonymous with tech-house in the Berlin underground. Recently though, Krause has deviated away from independent labels and launched his FORAX imprint, operating as a platform to channel all of his energy into his own creative worx’ and for each EP to act as a marker in his evolution as an artist.
008, the ‘Obsession EP’ represents a return to the core sound of his production. Conjuring a swift and tense 4-tracker that focusses specifically on groove building construction, whilst affirming the high magnitude danceability that you expect from Krause. 01 ‘Obsession’ is a smooth ride with a bite, tight with its execution, nimble and forthright with its groove layering. The drums are nicely skippy, with a deft motion and plenty of swing, as jolts of lightning synths and arped melodies dart between the beats. A sweet and lofty, yet perfectly punchy intro to the EP.
Up next is ‘Residual’ (02), a deep dive into the core of Krause’s crafty and dexterous sound. Functional, driving tech-house with meticulous drum programming and warped melodies. This one’s a funky little creeper, sliding into peak-time territory when the D-floor is fully adapted to the surroundings and in lockstep with the seductively wicked grooves. A true crowd pleaser to ramp up the intensity after the opening act.
Silos (03) is a slick and stompy tech-house hammer, firm and authoritative with the bit between its teeth. It wastes no time in stamping down its presence with a fierce intro, announcing its rapturous intentions from the start with the gnarling bass almost having to be held back. Serrated drum-play adds to the tuff exterior of the track, whilst peculiar percs and sequences generate just the right amount of intricate mystery to the groove. Krause knows exactly how to control a dance-floor and this is kind of bomb track he’ll pull from no where to send the D-floor into a heightened frenzy of headz-down acrobatics.
‘Solar Flares’ (04) sustains the momentum of the EP with a one last blast of high-octane grooves from the Berlin maestro. Krause ignites a warm exuberance into this final techy chapter by weaving another tantalising bassline with lucid pad-work and dreamy atmospheres, as beams of solar flare synth-lines flicker and pounce in the higher embers of the track. A wonderfully hazy and sedated climax for the EP, and a staple track selection for DJ’s to close out a set with memory inducing delight.
