B1 – Tibi Dabo & Dan Galgo – Forward Sinking [PP01]

Tibi Dabo and Dan Galgo combine as the artists to spear-head the first release of their Pillow Planet label. 001 is a deft-three tracker that refuses to play by any rules, and gracefully bridges the gap between classic sounds and forward-thinking intentions. The whole EP is infused with colour, style and creative expression, 2/3rds of it occupy the sunny-side-up vibrations of house and electro, before ducking under cover on the flip into darker waters for a late-night, progressive work-out.

A1 ‘Bibliote-k’ comprises a bright and bubbly strut, full of gleam and radiance like a summer’s walk down the French Riviera. Flickering between the lines of electro funk and discotheque house, it bounces straight into action with upbeat, skippy drums as the electro bass trickles into play and takes full control of the action. Subtly, bolts of luminous synths interplay and dance at the top end to create a soothing summer haze over the track, as slick, minimalist percs occupy the rest of the space to optimise the swing and intricate grooves. The vocals, though, are what really set this one up to be a sweet summer anthem. Initially humming the groove and uttering little glimpses like ‘Shake’, ‘Feel it’, and ‘Take your time’, they almost feel like tenuous instructions as the track grows into its stride, before it enters the chorus and delivers the ultimate message to leave your troubles behind and lose your mind in the discotheque.

A2 ‘Sky Highatrist’, delivers another lethally euphoric injection of sleazy electro-infused funk, a gorgeous little groover that promises to overspill your dopamine responses. Initially, it cruises elegantly into play with shifty 90’s house drums and stabs, but it’s not long until it propels into techier territory as the smoothly dexterous bassline amplifies the energy ten notches. It feels Sweely-esque, mysterious, funky house/electro that oozes swagga’ and stylish charm, perfect for a boogie in the hottest of climates.

Our premiere, the B1 flip, ‘Forward Sinking’ transcends into darker elements and elevates away from the summer-infused cuteness of the A-side with a moonlit bolt of progressive techno. The sharp kick and Congo drums set the foundations of a tribalistic dance-floor encounter, as the bass operates in the shadows, bubbling and exuding a dark plume of groove. In the higher echelons, echoes of bolting synth-lines charge through the mix like shooting stars, illuminating a beautifully dark and night-like atmosphere. It’s a track with storytelling characteristics, whether you’re listening at home or amongst it in a rave in the woods, it instantly transports you to a place where you’re locked away from the world.
