PREMIERE: A2 – vault – Drink This

We’re coming out of a minor hiatus to present to your ears a seriously exciting producer that has only just come onto our radar. Bali/Berlin man ‘vault’s style is stealth-like and dangerous, with a keen ear for twisted electro and techno tracks, with minimalistic bass heavy frequencies and acid-infused darkness. His latest EP drops on ‘PayToWin’ records, and is entitled ‘A Journey Through, Rupture and Rapture’. It’s an EP that ‘Draws from a period of constant movement’, written in multiple countries and created in a chamber of different moods. It’s affected by the various emotions that a DJ faces throughout their musical journeys, but vault expresses via his music that feelings of euphoria and melancholy can co-exist with eachother. The A-side captures the rapturous highs and energy of club culture, whilst the B-side offers a more mindful and spiritual experience, expanding the mind whilst still promising plenty of energy.

A1 ‘Danger Tool’ captures the ethereal essence of the 80’s with this highly infectious electro warper. The scene is set for a night-time escapade through down-town Miami in Knight Riders Pontiac Firebird, crusing through the hazy streets with the top down. vault conjures a radiating and immersive sound-scape that flickers and pulls you into the light, as pulsing arps and electrifying synth-lines interplay over the chugging jolts of the bassline. The oncoming vocals pierce into the mix mid-way through the first bassline, and promise to rupture the dance-floor. Oozing sharp tones like ‘Loving You is Like Playing With Dynamite’ and ‘You’re so explosive, just like TNT.’, fully amplifying the intensity and epitomising the dangerous attitude of this funky bomb.

Up next is the hazardous A2 ‘Drink This’ and our full premiere from the EP. Flipping the script, vault switches up with a completely different impulse for the EP’s second instalment, with this dark and rapturing techno missile. The early instances feel like the sounds of the hydron collider preparing for initiation, as the track explodes into action with murky analogue arps and it’s mechanical drums command an instant dance-floor pulse. An injection of trippy vocals make an entrance in the breakdown prior to the explosion of the second bassline, as an onslaught of tainted acidic synth-darts and ravey stabs elevate ‘Drink This’ into a wormhole of twisted hysteria.

The flip of the record shifts the vibe once more as we escape the industrial clutches of the A2 and emerge into a world of solace and floating ecstasy with ‘Leaning into Excess’ (B1). Echoing the ‘journey’ theme of this EP, it’s a track that captures the mind and feelings of a producer spending a lot away from normal life. The euphoric highs are often confronted with emotional low points and, and this track perfectly paints vault as a producer that is in touch with the emotional element of his music. ‘Leaning into Excess’ paints a mood of positive reflection and hopeful uplift, illusive padwork and a display of alluring synth-lines illuminate a trance-like ecstasy, whilst the stompy drums have an end-of-set exterior about them, making this one the perfect track to close out any set with a moment of spiritual transcendence.

Last up is ‘Brooding’, a moody but sick little stepper that confronts tension and mystical darkness with mechanical bassline weight and slick, coursing funk. Like it’s B-side brother, this side of the record is about the often rupturous feelings of a DJ, the frequent frustration and loneliness of being on the road. But once again, vault converts and utilises this energy by creating a serious and dark mid-set heater. Haunting pads create an illusion of trepidation, whilst ghostly arp-lines dance around the beat like a phantoms shadow. Amidst the dark and hectic vibe, the deft drums and and pouncing bass execute a wicked groove, fusing together for a slick ride and heads-down affair.
